WRIR‘s Live at WRIR Volume 1 makes its debut for the Summer Fund Drive 2011. A long road, but a worthwhile and rewarding one to say the least, Live at WRIR is the result of the hard work of the bands, and the mighty volunteers at WRIR. Sweet Swag

The WRIR ’10 Fall Fund Drive is in full swing this week … give-aways, CDS, live bands everyday … and much, much more. Head on over to WRIR and show some love and support … there are various levels of pledging available so don’t be shy: any and all support is put to good use and appreciated by a staff of peerless volunteers who pump out the quality for what Paste Magazine called one of “the best little radio stations in the U.S.”

Already got your shirt and/or record bag? {What? Go get one …} They let K do it, so let us see you in it … and keep that tote filled; that’s the kid of baggage we all need more of. No matter what your mother says.

Kick off the WRIR 2010 Fund Drive and your Halloween weekend with K and the Sunrise Ocean Bender Halloween {s}Edition … Don’t mind the smoke: it’s just the God of Hellfire and many others stoking the flames … it’s gonna get hot in the radio pot as he goes for the Great Pumpkin’s throat and sends the grown-ups home.

The WRIR 2010 Fund Drive doesn’t officially kick in until the 29th {through Nov. 7}, but if you’re an early bird looking for the würm, you can drop some candy in the WRIR bucket right here and get back to perfecting that mask. Either way you stroll to the graveyard, the Fund Drive is going to rise to the occasion: give-aways, live bands everyday, the new WRIR Fall Fund Drive ’10 t-shirt and record bag, and much, much more … my pretties.

WRIR, home of Kevin’s Sunrise Ocean Bender, is gearing up for it’s Fall Fund Drive … coming up right around the corner, October 29 – November 7 {early bird donations start this weekend}. This season’s drive is the ‘official’ introduction of the WRIR Fund Drive logo.

The logo will be featured on this year’s pledge premiums {WRIR t-shirt and tote}, as well as used on fund drive related materials. WRIR has two fund drives every year, Spring and Fall, and is a scorching time around the station: guests, in-studio live performances by local bands, plenty of fuel generously donated by Richmond restaurants, and, of course, the best DJs, hosts and tireless volunteers …

We’re thrilled that Kevin, who is on the Marketing Committee for WRIR, was able to lend a hand to one of, in Paste Magazine’s words, the “best little radio stations in the U.S.”

Richmond Independent Radio is a fresh new voice, on the air since January 1, 2005. We broadcast music you DON’T hear on the radio dial with live local DJ’s doing real live shows. In addition to our locally produced music shows, we offer a wide range of National and Local news programming that covers issues unrepresented by other media.

WRIR is a true community radio station.

  • We are locally owned, and by charter can never be bought out by any non local entity.
  • The station is operated by volunteers from the Richmond community. Our staff consists of your neighbors playing music, sharing news and operating the station.

Thank you for listening.

WRIR 97.3 FM Seeks Refresheverything.com Grant for Community Newsroom

WRIR is asking for a grant to diversify locally-produced radio news in a market big enough to need it, strong enough to volunteer for it and brave enough to air it. With the Community Newsroom, WRIR will train more citizen-journalists to collect and report independent radio news.

WRIR LP 97.3 FM, Richmond’s independent radio station, is seeking the community’s help to get a grant to fund construction of a Community Newsroom. WRIR would use this broadcast studio to gather and report more local, independent news. Presently WRIR has volunteers who produce the local news segments aired every weekday. With the Community Newsroom, WRIR will train more citizen-journalists to collect and report independent radio news. WRIR’s proposal is in the running for a $50,000 grant and will compete for votes at www.refresheverything.com/wrirRefresheverything.com is an online competition to fund projects that will have a positive impact on their community. You can vote online or via your twitter or Facebook accounts. You are allowed to vote every day in September with the last vote taken on September 30th.

“WRIR is very excited about this grant. It is a different approach to fundraising. Our listeners, supports and volunteers decide if we get the grant by voting every day either online or by text. If they do, WRIR has the chance to build a state-of-the-art studio with limitless potential! WRIR will also use the studio as back-up in the event of equipment failure in our main studio. It is our responsibility as the City of Richmond’s official emergency broadcast outlet” —  says Liz Humes, President of Virginia Center for Public Press the parent non-profit of WRIR.
