At K’s other job, he’s got an extensive interview with Steven Cerio. You may know Cerio from a long run of work with sonic pioneers The Residents, and posters for Primus, King Crimson, Monster Magnet…as well as working with Nickelodeon, Fantagraphics, Bill Graham Presents…he’s a dizzy talent, and K finds out a real gentlemen.

Grab a towel, jump in. You’ll need it.

“Being that I’m perpetually late to the party, it really didn’t surprise me all that much when I found out that Steven Cerio was the brains (or meat and potatoes) behind Atlantic Drone. I was already a big fan of his visuals (think The Residents for only one place to start), so when the road lead to Atlantic Drone, I was more embarrassed that I hadn’t clued into the signposts (more on those below) up ahead. A dizzingly prolific talent, Cerio is some ways like an inverted Little Dutch Boy (sorry, Mr. Cerio) who prefers to take his finger out, but is keenly aware of the importance of putting your fingers in it as well. Two opposing points of view? We’ll get to that, too, along with biscuits, Rick Wakemen’s attire and the dire need for a new hand gesture.

Grab a towel to mop up spilled milk and leaking ids…free association rests stops provided along the way as the journey becomes the destination. And by all means, when you’re done, leave the seat up…”

Richmond Magazine’s 24th “Best & Worst”

Recently wrapped up a run of illustrations for Richmond Magazine’s annual “Best & Worst” issue. It was a great project with a wealth of material…and fodder…Much of the research was a breeze this time around; step outside and take a walk. Goods were found, and discovered, at places and resources new to me, so some of it was a “learn-as-I-go” process that was not only helpful to this project, but gave me more in the arsenal for down the pike. Richmond Magazine was great to work with again and as always, gave me a lot of leeway to bring everything to the right finish line.

Second Verse, Same As the First

“ELKADER, Iowa—If it ain’t broke… why fix it? The digital music craze may one day totally erase all evidence of the physical album. But the record cover will always remain an icon to music (and art) lovers everywhere. Which is why the “rules” of this year’s Thirty Three and a Third (point two) Art Show remain the same as last.

Starting on Sunday, Nov. 13, 2011, Schera’s Fine Art in Elkader will host the first leg of the Thirty Three and a Third Point Two Art Show. The show features 33 and a third different artists and designers reinterpreting and re-imagining existing album covers in their own unique style. The size of each piece is 12” by 12” (the size of a vinyl LP), and the Iowa participants, along with many featured national and international artists, are using a variety of different media to come up with their covers.

Local illustrator and designer Dana Lechtenberg created and is once again curating the show, and his 5-year-old daughter, Emmalene, will be the final “third” artist rounding out the 33 and a third participants. “Last year’s response to the show was amazing,” Lechtenberg says. “The international coverage we received blew me away. We even had a magazine in Tokyo write a story on the show. This year is shaping up to be just as good as last year. The submissions have been incredible so far.”
