WRIR‘s Live at WRIR Volume 1 makes its debut for the Summer Fund Drive 2011. A long road, but a worthwhile and rewarding one to say the least, Live at WRIR is the result of the hard work of the bands, and the mighty volunteers at WRIR. Kevin had a blast being part of this and helping out with the design and to have the opportunity to work with some truly stellar folks up close and personal. Truly a community effort, Live at WRIR is what WRIR is all about. You can learn more about the Fund Drive and Live at WRIR right here

WRIR is also hosting a CD release party at Bogart’s in the Fan at the beginning of the Fund Drive…

Since we first began broadcasting in 2005, WRIR 97.3fm Richmond Independent Radio has invited musicians into our studios to perform on the air. On September 17th, WRIR will release a compilation of these exclusive live performances by international and local artists from the past 6 years. Live at WRIR Volume 1 is a limited edition CD available exclusively during WRIR’s 2011 Summer Fund Drive.

To celebrate its release, WRIR will host a party at Bogart’s in the Fan, featuring live sets from:

Splork! (reunion)
Ms. Proper
Pedals On Our Pirate Ships (solo)
Peace Beast
Moossa

Cover is a $5 donation to WRIR. You can also make your pledge and pick up a copy of Live at WRIR Vol. 1 at the show!

Kevin got the Q&A from Brent Almond, captain of Design Nut, on parenting, being a dad, thick skin and much more…Check it and see if he’s a fit parent…

Kevin McFadin is the husband of a former co-worker of mine. He and his wife Dawn are both incredible illustrators/designers and together own and operate Fan Works Design in Richmond, VA. He also wears a few other hats, which I’ll let him tell you about…

Q&A with designer dad Kevin McFadin

Tell me briefly about your design business and what kinds of clients you have.

I’ve been running the shop with Dawn since 2002. Before that I was an AD in Alexandria [VA] and up until then I was the staff illustrator at a couple of newspapers. I still pursue illustration, inside and outside of the shop.Getting up and running out of the DC Metro area many clients are, of course, associations and non-profits. We’ve worked with organizations based out of Richmond, such as Southern States and Child Fund, and helped some start-ups here in town when we were starting up ourselves.

Fox Elementary is ramping up for the 32nd annual Strawberry Street Festival, May 7th, from 12 to 4:30 pm. It’s a big deal, and every year gets bigger…music, bands, Foxy Flea Market, silent auction, games, activities, food, super creative vendors with all their wares and, of course, strawberries.

We got the call to jump into the fray and lend a hand to this year’s blow-out, joining a roster of incredible volunteers, teachers and students. We were asked to come on board and help out with this year’s t-shirt and poster design/illustration. And just like Caine’s mess boys, we couldn’t resist the lure of strawberries…

We started with a pencil.

The ‘Fox Zeppelin’ won out for the t-shirt this year, taking the iconic fox someplace it hadn’t been before. Strawberry Street Festival is one the biggest and most successful fundraisers of the year for Fox PTA, requiring vigilance, volunteering and watchful eyes to keep the machine operating smoothly. What better place to put your fox to keep that watchful eye? {The hen house concept lost out…}.

Strawberry Street Festival :: May 7, 12:30–4 p.m. :: 2300 Hanover Ave.

2011 Strawberry Street Festival T-shirt

You’ll be told to head to 2300 Hanover Avenue to find the happenings and trust me, you will. Happenings galore…but right on the corner is the festival’s namesake.

Sweet Swag

The WRIR ’10 Fall Fund Drive is in full swing this week … give-aways, CDS, live bands everyday … and much, much more. Head on over to WRIR and show some love and support … there are various levels of pledging available so don’t be shy: any and all support is put to good use and appreciated by a staff of peerless volunteers who pump out the quality for what Paste Magazine called one of “the best little radio stations in the U.S.”

Already got your shirt and/or record bag? {What? Go get one …} They let K do it, so let us see you in it … and keep that tote filled; that’s the kid of baggage we all need more of. No matter what your mother says.
