Kevin got the Q&A from Brent Almond, captain of Design Nut, on parenting, being a dad, thick skin and much more…Check it and see if he’s a fit parent…
Kevin McFadin is the husband of a former co-worker of mine. He and his wife Dawn are both incredible illustrators/designers and together own and operate Fan Works Design in Richmond, VA. He also wears a few other hats, which I’ll let him tell you about…
Q&A with designer dad Kevin McFadin
Tell me briefly about your design business and what kinds of clients you have.
I’ve been running the shop with Dawn since 2002. Before that I was an AD in Alexandria [VA] and up until then I was the staff illustrator at a couple of newspapers. I still pursue illustration, inside and outside of the shop.Getting up and running out of the DC Metro area many clients are, of course, associations and non-profits. We’ve worked with organizations based out of Richmond, such as Southern States and Child Fund, and helped some start-ups here in town when we were starting up ourselves.

K got the call to help out his DJ-brother in arms, valis, of the mighty Trip Inside This House, launching out of St. Louis on KDHX, with some chocolate visuals to get into his aural peanut butter.
Every year valis does a Summer Solstice compilation for the event that you can grab at his stellar blog gratis. Well worth checking out if you need fuel in your rocket. Point that mouse in the proper compass direction, click, put up your feet, take a deep breath, put on your helmet and enjoy the ride…

Last week the New York State Supreme Court, New York County, dismissed all claims in a million dollar lawsuit brought by the Graphic Artists Guild (GAG) against the Illustrators’ Partnership of America (IPA) and five named individuals.
In the lawsuit, GAG asserted claims for defamation and interference with contractual relations, alleging that IPA had interfered with a “business relationship” GAG had entered into that enabled GAG to collect orphaned reprographic royalties derived from the licensing of illustrators’ work. GAG alleged that efforts by IPA to create a collecting society to return lost royalties to artists “interfered” with GAG’s “business” of appropriating these orphaned fees.

It really doesn’t get much simpler than this … and it really doesn’t need to be. Let the music do the talking, and your eyes do the walking … Check them all out at 33.3 Art Show.
Hi. I’m Andrew and I like it when people call me an illustrator, graphic designer, or “the sensible one”.
At one point I was going to re-imagine The Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band but then thought “Why do that when I could interpret the album that INSPIRED it?!?” I mean, who inspires the Beatles?! Frig The Beach Boys are cool.

K recently finished up this set of pieces for TGD Communications to be used on a wealth of materials for the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists. We used to be based in the DC Metro area, so much of the scouring and research for this run was fairly autopilot, if not tinged with some nostalgia.
“Working on pieces that are ‘DC’ can be strange since the area virtually comes with a visual syntax all its own … it’s hard to get away from the obvious since so much of DC is … obvious. But TGD was open to something a bit different from the usual tried and true red, white and blue.
You usually only hear horror stories of projects gone wrong or manhandled beyond all hope, but I have to say, TGD was fantastic to work with. From start to finish one of the smoothest roads I’ve been down.”
