Kevin recently finished wrapping up the 2010 annual report for the American Health Assistance Foundation {AHAF}, based out of Clarksburg, MD. AHAF has been partnering with us since we opened our doors and this year was no different when the time came to move on their annual report. AHAF’s main focus is on their three programs: Alzheimer’s Disease Research, Macular Degeneration Research, and National Glaucoma Research. Through education, research and advocacy, AHAF is a leading light in providing vital information to researchers, as well as patients and their care-givers.

Congratulations to AHAF on another year of progress towards finding cures and relief for families and their friends.

WRIR, home of Kevin’s Sunrise Ocean Bender, is gearing up for it’s Fall Fund Drive … coming up right around the corner, October 29 – November 7 {early bird donations start this weekend}. This season’s drive is the ‘official’ introduction of the WRIR Fund Drive logo.

The logo will be featured on this year’s pledge premiums {WRIR t-shirt and tote}, as well as used on fund drive related materials. WRIR has two fund drives every year, Spring and Fall, and is a scorching time around the station: guests, in-studio live performances by local bands, plenty of fuel generously donated by Richmond restaurants, and, of course, the best DJs, hosts and tireless volunteers …

We’re thrilled that Kevin, who is on the Marketing Committee for WRIR, was able to lend a hand to one of, in Paste Magazine’s words, the “best little radio stations in the U.S.”

Richmond Independent Radio is a fresh new voice, on the air since January 1, 2005. We broadcast music you DON’T hear on the radio dial with live local DJ’s doing real live shows. In addition to our locally produced music shows, we offer a wide range of National and Local news programming that covers issues unrepresented by other media.

WRIR is a true community radio station.

  • We are locally owned, and by charter can never be bought out by any non local entity.
  • The station is operated by volunteers from the Richmond community. Our staff consists of your neighbors playing music, sharing news and operating the station.

Thank you for listening.

From DesignTaxi … a little eye candy to go with yer tunes …

“Quarterly art magazine I Want You is running a series of exclusive graphic art pieces on its website by Hungarian/German designer David Szakaly aka davidope.

The pieces, animated GIFs that perform optical tricks, are hypnotically beautiful—the stuff of toked-up fantasies. Each GIF endlessly repeats itself in perpetual motion, so you could quite possibly stare blankly at them for a while.”

We never really had cause to read Fortune, but we’re working on it … But that’s another story … but over on the ubiquitous Facebook you should check out Vintage Fortune Magazine for some really wonderful covers and layouts from the glory days that tell a different story … illustrations, type, design … it’s a real feast for the eyes. Well worth checking out for inspiration, as well as good old craftsmanship and pure eye candy.

“Vintage Fortune Magazine is a celebration of the visual achievements of Fortune and the glory days of magazine making.”

” “Why use and when you can use &?” asks design student Scott Berry.

After all, it’s two characters less than an ‘and’, yet besides brand names and the occasional news headline, the ampersand isn’t used at all; the poor symbol can hardly find a place in body copy anywhere  …”

Fan Works is thrilled to begin partnering with The Wildlife Center of Virginia. The Wildlife Center is a wonderful organization acting as “a hospital for native wildlife, teaching the world to care about and to care for wildlife and the environment.”

In the Center’s own words:

“The Wildlife Center of Virginia was formed in 1982 to provide quality health care, often on an emergency basis, to native wildlife.

Since 1982, the Wildlife Center has:

  • treated more than 50,000 wild animals, representing 200 species of native birds, mammals, reptiles, and amphibians
  • shared the lessons learned from these cases with some 1.4 million school-children and adults across Virginia
  • trained a corps of wildlife medicine practitioners, including veterinarians, veterinary technicians, and volunteer wildlife rehabilitators. Those who have benefited from the professional training programs offered by the Center may now be found on the cutting-edge of wildlife veterinary medicine around the world.

In 2007, the Wildlife Center received the National Conservation Achievement Award as the Conservation Organization of the Year from the National Wildlife Federation.”

Fan Works will begin working with the Center this year on a wide range of projects helping them to get the word out on all the stellar work they do.

We’re eagerly looking forward to working with such a committed and valuable group of folks {and critters}. If you have a moment, check out their site and learn about who they are, news and events from the Center, and how you can help.

FROM THE ILLUSTRATORS’ PARTNERSHIP

Authors Groups Meet in Oslo

10.22.09

OSLO NORWAY Over 60 authors organizations met here this week to discuss strategies for defending authors’ rights in the digitized world. Their call to action is reminiscent of the grassroots coalition that came together in the US last year to oppose the Orphan Works bill. In addition to concerns over anti-copyright legislation, authors around the world, including visual artists, face threats from piracy, unauthorized usage, all-rights contracts and, in the US, the loss and/or dissipation of their reprographic royalties.

The Oslo meeting was held concurrent with the anniversary of the founding of the International Federation of Reproduction Rights Organizations (IFRRO). IFRRO was born in Oslo 25 years ago. In the last quarter century, it has grown to 190 members and associate members, of which the Illustrators’ Partnership is one.

IFRRO was founded by a small group of visionaries who believed that there was a need for an international organization of Reprographic Rights Organizations (RROs). RROs are collecting societies that monitor and clear rights to authors’ creations in collective works such as books, magazines, etc. They grant rights, as mandated by authors, collect fees and return royalties to illustrators, artists, writers and others.

Collecting societies are a new concept to most American illustrators. They exist in countries around the world, but currently, there are none for illustrators in the US. Two years ago, the Illustrators’ Partnership brought together 12 prominent visual arts organizations. These groups have incorporated as the American Society of Illustrators Partnership (ASIP).

ASIP, which has been chartered as a collecting society, hopes to begin the long-overdue process of bringing accountability to illustrators’ reprographic rights. The 12 founding groups of ASIP also formed the nucleus of the 85 organizations that opposed the Orphan Works bill. In future reports, we’ll tell you more about what illustrators can do individually to help us build this formal coalition into a functioning society.

Another Anniversary: The 1999 Santa Fe Conference

The meeting of authors this week in Oslo recalls another anniversary closer to home: the first Illustrators Conference, which opened 10 years ago this week in Santa Fe.

The Santa Fe Conference was a grassroots event founded by 8 artists and reps who believed that illustrators should not accept a slow evolution toward the dissolution of their rights. The conference led to the creation of the Illustrators’ Partnership – founded by 3 of the same artists- to act on the initiatives first raised at that pioneering event.

So now, as authors worldwide issue a call for cooperative action, we’re pleased to note that the spirit of Santa Fe, invoked by illustrators a decade ago, is still alive and well in the US. It’s the spirit that guided artists in Washington last year and with luck, it may yet swell and aid in the preservation of copyright law, which is the legal means by which the distinctive expressions of individuals are themselves preserved.
