Ultimate Weird But True is the next installment in National Geographic Kids Weird But True franchise, which started as a popular feature in National Geographic Kids—the nation’s top-selling children’s magazine—and then grew into the blockbuster Weird But True paperback series. Now Ultimate Weird But True gives kids a super-sized hardcover book that they’ll pore over for months and return to for years to come.”

Dawn recently lent an invaluable assist on National Geographic Kids’ Ultimate Weird but Trueout now. Working with NGK’s arsenal of top talent, Dawn teamed up in the layout and design of multiple chapters for “a bold, colorful design and a heavy dose of visual humor.”

WRIR‘s Live at WRIR Volume 1 makes its debut for the Summer Fund Drive 2011. A long road, but a worthwhile and rewarding one to say the least, Live at WRIR is the result of the hard work of the bands, and the mighty volunteers at WRIR. Kevin had a blast being part of this and helping out with the design and to have the opportunity to work with some truly stellar folks up close and personal. Truly a community effort, Live at WRIR is what WRIR is all about. You can learn more about the Fund Drive and Live at WRIR right here

WRIR is also hosting a CD release party at Bogart’s in the Fan at the beginning of the Fund Drive…

Kevin got the Q&A from Brent Almond, captain of Design Nut, on parenting, being a dad, thick skin and much more…Check it and see if he’s a fit parent…

Kevin McFadin is the husband of a former co-worker of mine. He and his wife Dawn are both incredible illustrators/designers and together own and operate Fan Works Design in Richmond, VA. He also wears a few other hats, which I’ll let him tell you about…

Q&A with designer dad Kevin McFadin

Tell me briefly about your design business and what kinds of clients you have.

I’ve been running the shop with Dawn since 2002. Before that I was an AD in Alexandria [VA] and up until then I was the staff illustrator at a couple of newspapers. I still pursue illustration, inside and outside of the shop.Getting up and running out of the DC Metro area many clients are, of course, associations and non-profits. We’ve worked with organizations based out of Richmond, such as Southern States and Child Fund, and helped some start-ups here in town when we were starting up ourselves.

“Genericide: When a Brand Name Becomes Generic”Airs Saturday May 7th and Thursday May 12th, 2011.This week, the Age of Persuasion looks at the concept of “Genericide” – when brand names become generic. If a product remains the number one brand for decades, it risks losing control of its trademark. Many pioneering brands suffered that fate. Just ask the board game “Monopoly,” who lost the right to their own trademark recently. As a result, other big brands are fighting to prevent genericide – like Kleenex and Band-Aid.”

I have to agree with the comment that this was feasible without the computer, but…

“This poster illustrates a change in design practice. Computation-based design—that is, the use of algorithms to compute options—is becoming more practical and more common. Design tools are becoming more computation-based; designers are working more closely with programmers; and designers are taking up programming.”

Kevin recently finished wrapping up the 2010 annual report for the American Health Assistance Foundation {AHAF}, based out of Clarksburg, MD. AHAF has been partnering with us since we opened our doors and this year was no different when the time came to move on their annual report. AHAF’s main focus is on their three programs: Alzheimer’s Disease Research, Macular Degeneration Research, and National Glaucoma Research. Through education, research and advocacy, AHAF is a leading light in providing vital information to researchers, as well as patients and their care-givers.

Congratulations to AHAF on another year of progress towards finding cures and relief for families and their friends.

WRIR, home of Kevin’s Sunrise Ocean Bender, is gearing up for it’s Fall Fund Drive … coming up right around the corner, October 29 – November 7 {early bird donations start this weekend}. This season’s drive is the ‘official’ introduction of the WRIR Fund Drive logo.

The logo will be featured on this year’s pledge premiums {WRIR t-shirt and tote}, as well as used on fund drive related materials. WRIR has two fund drives every year, Spring and Fall, and is a scorching time around the station: guests, in-studio live performances by local bands, plenty of fuel generously donated by Richmond restaurants, and, of course, the best DJs, hosts and tireless volunteers …

We’re thrilled that Kevin, who is on the Marketing Committee for WRIR, was able to lend a hand to one of, in Paste Magazine’s words, the “best little radio stations in the U.S.”

Richmond Independent Radio is a fresh new voice, on the air since January 1, 2005. We broadcast music you DON’T hear on the radio dial with live local DJ’s doing real live shows. In addition to our locally produced music shows, we offer a wide range of National and Local news programming that covers issues unrepresented by other media.

WRIR is a true community radio station.

  • We are locally owned, and by charter can never be bought out by any non local entity.
  • The station is operated by volunteers from the Richmond community. Our staff consists of your neighbors playing music, sharing news and operating the station.

Thank you for listening.
